Student Life

A New Generation

The student employees at Quentin N. Burdick Job Corps have enormous opportunities to further their education and begin a successful career track. Burdick Job Corps is committed to providing a Career Development System that helps our student employees establish their career goals from the time of application to the day they begin a job after graduation.

From the first moment a student employee enters Burdick Job Corps, staff help students to prepare for a career. The center's Orientation/Career Development Program assists student employees as they make their adjustment to the structure of center life. During this phase, students employees are introduced to Center rules and expectations, as well as given the chance to meet student leaders who help them feel comfortable with their fellow student employees. Student employees also take a series of assessment tests, known as the Tests of Adult Basic Education. These tests help staff to determine if student employees need additional assistance in math, reading, or writing skills in order to be successful on the job.

After the Orientation and Career Preparation Phase is completed, the student employees transition into the academics program and their trade. At every level of the Burdick program, employability skills are stressed to help better prepare individuals for successful careers. Expectations are high for the student employees, and social skills and independent living skills are reinforced throughout the program.

During their training in their trade, student employees are offered the opportunity to participate in both unpaid as well as paid work experiences. These valuable work based learning opportunities provide student employees with valuable experience that often lead to full time jobs at those locations.

Once a student employee completes their GED, or high school diploma, and their trade, they are offered assistance in job placement, housing, and identifying transportation needs.

At Burdick Job Corps, student employees have the opportunity to become not just "employable," but "promotable." That's why we say, "Give Us a Year, We'll Give You a Lifetime!"
